Thank you to all the people who came out last weekend (despite the heat) to visit with me and the other artists showing at Studio #31, in the Rutherford Grange.  Really, thank you!  We were happy to find that the old Grange building, which is being lovingly restored by a dedicated group of people, kept us comfortably cool through the heat of the day.  I enjoyed the honor of welcoming folks who had visited my Open Studio in prior years as well as meeting first-time visitors.

For those who missed last weekend, you’ve got two more days!  We’ll be welcoming visitors again this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, September 26 & 27th, from 10 am to 5 pm.  It’s expected to be cooler this weekend, so please come on out for this fun and free art tour.

Open Studios Napa Valley 2015

“Sunlight and Shadow”  by Sheila G. Ticen

This year I’ll be joining forces with five other artists for Open Studios Napa Valley, which is coming right up!  Artists throughout the Napa Valley will be opening their doors to art lovers during the last two weekends of September.  The six of us will be showing our work and greeting visitors in Studio #31, located in the historic Rutherford Grange at 8550 Saint Helena Highway, in Rutherford, California.

The other artists showing at Studio #31 are:

  • Cheryl Thompson, an oil painter whose work includes glowing California landscapes
  • Catherine George, whose creations include jewelry and playful ceramic sculptures
  • June Lee, whose vibrant abstract monotypes reflect spontaneity and energy
  • Nancy Flores, another oil painter, whose figurative works range from dramatic to whimsical
  • Julia Arrington, whose oil paintings, often landscapes, contrast bold forms with intimate detail and texture

(Editor’s Note – Unfortunately, it appears that Julia may not be joining us after all.  I’m keeping her on the list in case she finds a way to make it happen after all.)

Open Studio hours are 10 am to 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday September 19, 20, 26 & 27, 2015.  Click here for a map to Studio #31.  For information about the event, all the participating artists, maps and more, go to www.artnv.org.

25 Years, 25 Artists: The Painting Students of Mark Perlman

The University Gallery at Sonoma State University is honoring Professor Perlman as he approaches his  retirement after 25 years on the Art Department faculty at SSU.  As I understand it, it was Mark’s idea to put together a show featuring the work of some of his students as a way to look back over and celebrate his years of teaching.  Accordingly, this exhibition will feature the work of 25 of Mark’s former painting students and I am very pleased and honored to be among the selected artists.

The roster of artists for the show includes Annie Berryman, Ryan Butler, Danielle Caldwell, Cathy Ellis, Nick Gagliardi, Natalie Garoian, Jen Garrido, Alisa Gierloff, Amy Hoeck, Mike Koftinow, Machiko Kondo, Andrew Merriss, Mozhgan Mostafavi, Matt Mullins, Josh Nemec, Heather Patterson, James Phegan, Susan Preston, Frank Ryan, Mary Sanders, Halle Seipman, Sheila Ticen (that’s me!), Alma Valverde, Geirrod VanDyke, and Annie Watson.

Not Just Landscapes – A National Juried Exhibition

The landscape has long been a compelling and rewarding subject for artists, at times intended primarily as a faithful depiction of a notable scene, but at times alluding to other meanings.  The forms, light and space in a landscape scene may represent the twists and turns of a river, a road, a mind, or a culture.  For this exhibit artists were invited to submit works that addressed the landscape in some manner, whether it be seascape or cityscape, futuristic, psychological or metaphoric.  Juror Mark Perlman had the task of narrowing down the 550 or so entries to an exhibit of 70 pieces.

I am very happy that my painting, Getting There From Here, was selected to be among the pieces in this exhibit!   The exhibit will be on view from August 1 through September 7, 2013 at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts.
